What can you see in Heraklion in two days? Is that enough time?
In just two days, you’ll already be able to see a lot: Venice’s historic center, a major museum, and the Palace of Knossos. Maps of must-see attractions
To help you navigate our itineraries below, here is our map of the main tourist attractions in Heraklion:

Getting around Heraklion
It’s very easy to explore downtown Heraklion on foot, as most of the attractions are concentrated within a 1- to 2-kilometer radius. We found that walking was the most enjoyable way to soak up the atmosphere of the narrow streets, especially on a short stay. You can also opt for a hop-on-hop-off bus tour, which is a convenient way to see the main sights quickly. Book your Hop-On-Hop-Off pass now.

To reach more distant locations, the city bus network serves the main tourist areas, the beaches, and the airport (more info here). If traveling by car, traffic can be heavy and parking can be difficult in the historic center. We recommend the Theseus Heraklion City Parking, located at 18 Thiseos Street, which offers a convenient valet service. Read our article to find out where to park in Heraklion here.

Our 4 Ideas for Weekends in Heraklion
Rather than a single itinerary, we’ve come up with four different ways to spend a weekend in Heraklion, each tailored to a specific interest. You can pick and choose from these ideas, combine them, or focus on just one day, depending on your own pace. We recommend deciding in advance which vibe suits you best.
Idea 1 – A Weekend in Venice’s Old Town and Exploring Its Heritage
This first suggestion is ideal for those who want, above all, to immerse themselves in the history of Heraklion. We enjoyed spending an entire day in the historic center, as it is so rich in Venetian heritage. On the second day, you can then set out to explore Knossos, the island’s most iconic site.

Day 1: The Old Town, Agios Minas Cathedral, and the Archaeological Museum
Start with the Morosini Fountain (Lion Fountain), built in 1628, then the Loggia, an elegant 17th-century Renaissance building that now houses City Hall. We consider it one of the most beautiful Venetian landmarks in Crete. Continue on to theAgios Titos Church and the Basilica of Agios Markos, then stroll along the 1866 shopping street and its traditional market featuring Cretan spices and herbs.

Late in the morning, head to the Agios Minas Cathedral, built between 1862 and 1895, whose architecture blends Neo-Byzantine influences with classical elements. Spend the afternoon at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, where we saw the famous frescoes from Knossos and the “Snake Goddess.” Plan on spending between 1.5 and 3 hours there. Book your audioguide tickets now to avoid the queues.

Day 2: The Palace of Knossos and the Koules Fortress
The Palace of Knossos, just 5 km south of Heraklion, is the most important center of Minoan civilization. We were fascinated by the myths that originated in this legendary city, such as the Labyrinth and the Minotaur. Arrive early in the morning, around 8 a.m., to avoid the large tour groups that start arriving at 9 a.m. Plan on spending between 2 and 3 hours on your visit. Book your guided tour now to learn all about this incredible place.

Back in town, round out your weekend with a visit to the Koules Fortress, built between 1523 and 1540 by the Venetians. We especially enjoyed the view of the Mediterranean from the ramparts. Allow about an hour for the visit, then extend your evening with a stroll along the Old Port.

Idea 2 – A Weekend of Culture, Music, and Fine Dining
This second idea is for those who, above all, want to have authentic experiences, ranging from unique museums to local cuisine. We found this itinerary to be particularly rich in emotions and encounters.
Day 1: The Kotsanas Museum, the Thirathen Museum, and a food tour
Start with the Kotsanas Museum, dedicated to ancient Greek technology. We were amazed by the precision of the Antikythera Mechanism, considered the first analog computer in history. Plan on spending between 1 and 2 hours there. Visit the official website for more information here.

Next, visit the Thirathen Museum, where the tour is led by the owner, a passionate musician who brings the explanations to life by playing instruments and singing. We loved the friendly atmosphere there. End the day with a food tour—a chance to sample Cretan specialties in the city’s most iconic neighborhoods. Fancy a food tour? Find out more and book.

Day 2: The Old Town and a Cretan meal
Spend your morning exploring the old town, between the Morosini Fountain, the Loggia, and the 1866 shopping street. We recommend strolling without a set itinerary, taking in the Venetian facades and the scent of spices. In the afternoon, treat yourself to a gourmet break at one of the local taverns to sample dakos, moussaka, or dolmades, paired with Cretan wines.

Round out your weekend with a visit to Koules Fortress and a stroll through the Old Port, where the atmosphere at the end of the day is especially pleasant. We think this is a wonderful way to wrap up a trip focused on culture and local flavors.

Idea 3 – Weekend Getaway and Relaxation
For those who also want to get out of the city, this third idea combines exploring the city center with a getaway to eastern Crete. We were struck by the contrasts of this weekend—between the hustle and bustle of the capital and the tranquility of the coast. This option is best suited if you have a car or book an organized tour, since Spinalonga and Agios Nikolaos require a full day’s trip from Heraklion.

Day 1: The Historic Center and the Archaeological Museum
Spend your first day in the city center, between the Venetian Old Town and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. We recommend booking your tickets with an audio guide in advance to avoid the lines. Book your tickets now. In the late afternoon, take a break at Ammoudara Beach, 5 km from the center, to relax after your tour.

Day 2: Excursion to Spinalonga and Agios Nikolaos
Head to eastern Crete to explore the island of Spinalonga, a former Venetian stronghold that became a leper colony in the early 20th century. We were deeply moved by the atmosphere that emanates from these ruins. The boat ride from Elounda takes about 15 minutes. Round out the day with a stop in Agios Nikolaos, an elegant seaside resort known for Lake Voulismeni and its lively atmosphere. See the itinerary and availability for the guided tour.

Idea 4 – Family Weekend
One last idea, designed for families with children. We found that this format offered a nice balance of fun discoveries and relaxing moments, without being too hectic for the little ones. Read our article to learn how to explore Heraklion with children.

Day 1: The Kotsanas Museum and Ammoudara Beach
The Kotsanas Museum offers interactive demonstrations where children can try their hand at operating replicas of ancient machines. We found it to be one of the most family-friendly museums—both fun and educational. Plan on spending between 1 and 2 hours there. In the afternoon, head to Ammoudara Beach, where the shallow water is perfect for children. You can get there by bus in about 30 minutes or by rental car in 15 minutes.

Day 2: Watercity Park or Cretaquarium
End the weekend with a relaxing day at Watercity Park, a 30-minute drive away, which features wave pools, thrilling water slides, and relaxation areas. We recommend this option for the hottest days. See schedule and availability for Watercity Park. Please note that Watercity Park is a seasonal attraction, typically open from May through October, depending on the weather: be sure to check the dates before including it in your weekend plans.

If you prefer a more peaceful option, the Cretaquarium—also a 30-minute drive away—invites you to explore the marine life of the Mediterranean. We think this is the perfect activity for children who are curious about marine life. Entrance ticket to the Cretaquarium.

What You Need to Know for Your Weekend in Heraklion
The weather in Heraklion
The best time to visit Heraklion is from April through October. Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) offer pleasant temperatures for cultural sightseeing. We recommend these times of year for a weekend getaway without excessive heat. Summer (June–August) is still perfect for beach-oriented activities, but temperatures can be very high for outdoor activities.

From November through March, the Cretan capital returns to its local winter rhythm, with mild temperatures (an average of 10–15°C / 50–59°F). Rainfall is more frequent in winter—up to 9 rainy days per month—but rainy days alternate with sunny spells. We find this a great time for a weekend focused on museums.
The crowds in Heraklion
Heraklion can get very crowded during peak season, especially at the Palace of Knossos, where large tour buses start arriving as early as 9 a.m. We recommend visiting the main attractions early in the morning or late in the afternoon, no matter which weekend you choose. The city in winter offers a more authentic experience, with more affordable prices and fewer crowds in the museums.
Where to Eat in Heraklion
Good food is also part of the travel experience! Heraklion is full of great places to eat, from Cretan taverns in the small squares of the old town to elegant restaurants serving innovative cuisine and contemporary cafés. We dined at several restaurants in the Cretan capital and were won over by the richness of the local cuisine, from farm-fresh ingredients to olive oil-based desserts. Read our article on the best restaurants in town!

Adjusting Your Itinerary When It Rains
If it rains during your weekend in Heraklion, don’t panic—the city is full of museums offering enriching experiences. We highly recommend the Archaeological Museum, the Kotsanas Museum, and the Thirathen Museum, all of which were mentioned earlier in our weekend ideas.

The Christian Art Museum, the Video Games Museum, and the RAM Rulers Computer and Gaming Museum are also good options for rainy days. See our list of the best museums in Heraklion.
