Frequently asked questions

Is it difficult to park in Heraklion?

Parking in Heraklion is a serious business, especially in the city center. The medieval alleyways are narrow, traffic density is high, and local habits don’t help: double-parking is commonplace. We found this to be the case during our visit to the Cretan capital. The problem remains acute all year round, with a notable peak from June to September, when ferry arrivals dramatically increase the number of people in the city center. It’s a good idea to plan your parking even before you arrive in town, by opting for one of the paid parking lots near the port or the historic center.

Parking in Heraklion: summary

Careful street parking

On-street parking in Heraklion is strictly color-coded. White lines indicate free parking, but these are rare in the center and are contested at dawn. Road markings may vary from one area to another. Always check local signs before parking. A particular Greek feature deserves special attention: the local police are empowered to remove the license plates of badly parked vehicles, in addition to issuing fines. We strongly advise you not to tempt fate and to opt directly for a structured parking lot.

Free parking

Free solutions exist in Heraklion, but they are limited and subject to major constraints. More details later in this article. Always check for changes on the official website of the parking lot in question when available.

The main parking lots for tourists

  • Heraklion Port parking lot (Limani 1 & 2) – Outdoor, 06:00 to 22:00, chargeable (free on Sundays) – official website here
The city’s most economical solution, spacious and conveniently located on the waterfront.
  • Central Parking Heraklion – Underground, 24 hours a day, fee-paying (official website here)
The comfort option in the heart of the historic center, including valet parking.
  • Robotic Parking Plastira Center – Fully automated underground parking, 24 hours a day, chargeable
An innovative and secure structure along the southern ramparts – official website here
  • Theseos Parking – Covered/underground, 24h/24, chargeable
Ideally located for museums and Eleftherias Square – official page here

Details of each parking lot are given later in the article.

Essential tips

  • In high season, demand is very high. It is imperative to arrive before 10:00 a.m. to find a space in the low-cost parking lots or at the port.
  • If you’re staying in Heraklion, ask your accommodation provider about options: some hotels offer preferential rates with adjacent secure parking facilities.
  • In Greece, local police can remove license plates from badly parked vehicles. Zero tolerance is real and applies to rental cars too
  • As in all tourist areas: do not leave any visible objects or luggage in the passenger compartment. Place all belongings in the closed trunk before arriving at your destination.

Where to park to get closer to specific places in Heraklion

Heraklion concentrates most of its attractions in the historic center, but there are some notable sites further afield. Here are our recommendations to suit your schedule.
See our article on Heraklion’s top attractions.

Where to park to visit the historic center: Rue du 25-Août and Place des Lions

For strolling along August 25th Street (Leoforos 25is Avgoustou) to Lions’ Square (Platia Eleftheriou Venizelou), Central Parking Heraklion is the most convenient option. Its location, just a few meters from the main pedestrian thoroughfare, means you can immediately reach the fountains and shopping streets without any detours. We particularly appreciate the facility’s valet parking service, which avoids complicated maneuvers in a city where space is at a premium. In addition, the port parking lot offers an economical alternative, just a 10-minute walk from Place des Lions.

Where to park to visit Heraklion Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is one of the most important museums in the Mediterranean. There are two options for getting up close and personal:

  • Theseos Parking (18 Thiseos Street) – the closest option to the museum, ideal for a focused visit.
  • Parking du Port – located at the foot of the Koules Fortress, perfect for combining a stroll along the pier and a visit to the museum in a single day.

Where can I park to visit the Venetian Walls and Koules Fortress?

To explore the impressive Venetian Walls that encircle the city and reach the Koules Fortress on the old harbor jetty, the Robotic Parking Plastira Center is the ideal solution: it’s located directly alongside the southern fortifications, at the Martinengo Bastion. The port parking lot is also an excellent base from which to walk to the fortress, whose entrance is just a few minutes away. The ramparts can be reached from either location without any detours or significant elevation changes.

Where can I park to visit the beaches near Heraklion?

Most of Heraklion’s beaches have either supervised or unsupervised parking. This may be free or for a fee, depending on the beach. Please note that the following beaches have parking facilities:

  • Ammoudara Beach
  • Amnissos Beach
  • Karteros Beach

If you’re traveling in summer, it’s best to arrive before 10 a.m. on the beaches closest to Heraklion, especially Ammoudara, where parking lots can fill up quickly at weekends and during school vacations. For a day out with young children, Ammoudara is generally the easiest option, thanks to its long sandy beach, numerous services and parking facilities spread along the seafront.

Frequently asked questions

Where to park without walking too far in Heraklion?

For families with baby carriages, people with reduced mobility or those who prefer to avoid uneven ground, Central Parking Heraklion (26 Koronaiou Street) is the best option. Its valet parking service avoids any difficult maneuvers, and its location in the heart of the city limits walking distances on flat ground, even if some sidewalks remain and the surface is not always even. Please note: in Greece, European PRM cards do not exempt you from paying at private facilities. No special administrative procedures are required for Heraklion parking lots. However, we recommend that you ask your accommodation provider to identify the most convenient access points for you.

Secure underground parking lots in Heraklion

If you’re leaving your car for several days or traveling with luggage, two parking lots stand out for their level of security. Central Parking Heraklion and Robotic Parking Plastira Center both offer a high level of security: the former thanks to the constant presence of agents and video surveillance, the latter thanks to its robotized system that stores vehicles out of reach of the public, eliminating any risk of scratching or intrusion.

Heraklion - Secure underground parking lots in Heraklion

Is there a 24-hour parking lot in Heraklion?

Good news for travelers arriving at night or leaving early in the morning: several Heraklion parking lots operate continuously, 7 days a week (Central Parking Heraklion, Robotic Parking Plastira Center, Theseos Parking). Automatic pay stations accept cash, credit cards and various mobile applications. The Port Car Park closes its entrances at 10.00 pm, but remains accessible for exits after this time if the vehicle is already there.

Where is the cheapest parking lot in Heraklion?

The Parking du Port (Limani) is without doubt the most affordable option, at €3.00 for the whole day on weekdays and free on Sundays. The main drawback is that entry times stop at 10:00 p.m., and it’s a ten-minute walk from the historic center. By contrast, the Robotic Parking Plastira Center offers a 24-hour pass for just €8.00, making it the best deal among the permanent underground structures.

Is it possible to book parking in Heraklion in advance?

Municipal parking lots, including the Parking du Port, do not offer online reservations. For private car parks in the center, however, it’s advisable to use global platforms such as ParkVia, or to contact your hotel directly to check the availability of an affiliated space. In high season, this can be decisive.
