Crete is an island that fascinates with its diversity of landscapes: paradisiacal beaches with turquoise waters, spectacular gorges, traditional villages and ancient remains. The choice was extremely difficult, but an article with 100 photos would be too long, and wouldn’t help you make a choice.
Here is our selection of the most beautiful landscapes of Crete to discover during your trip.
We hope these photos of Crete will inspire you to explore this exceptional island!

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Crete’s landscapes
Crete boasts a diversity of landscapes rarely seen in the Mediterranean. In just a few kilometers, you’ll pass from pink sand beaches to breathtaking gorges, from tropical palm groves to craggy peaks. Not forgetting urban landscapes with Venetian fortresses!
What struck us most were the colors.
- Turquoise waters
- pink sand,
- white villages
- Rock with variations from orange to brown
- …
1. Balos lagoon – Cretan postcard

The Balos lagoon embodies the Mediterranean dream. We spent a long time contemplating the shades of blue and turquoise that mingle in this shallow lagoon. The white sand contrasts magnificently with the crystal-clear waters.
There are two options for getting there: an 8km unpaved track followed by a 20min descent on foot, or a boat trip from Kissamos(to be booked).
It’s truly a place out of time!
2. Loutro village – an explosion of color

Loutro is a unique village in Crete, accessible only by boat or on foot. This gives it an incomparably peaceful atmosphere. The white houses line a small bay with transparent waters.
We liked the simplicity of the place, where it’s quiet once the tour boats have left. And look at those colors!

3. Viewpoint from Preveli beach

Preveli beach is one of our absolute favorites. This unique palm grove stretches along a river that flows into the sea, creating an almost tropical landscape. It combines many of the distinctive features of the Cretan landscape: mountain, beach, palm grove, turquoise waters…
Access is via a downhill path from the parking lot, or by boat from Plakias. Bring your water shoes with you as you head upstream to discover the best spots.
4. Port of Chania – urban landscape in Crete

The Venetian port of Chania is probably the most photogenic in Crete. The lighthouse that marks the entrance to the port dates from the 16th century and is the town’s landmark. We strolled along the quays lined with tavernas and colorful houses reflecting Venetian architecture.
We loved the colors. Make sure you spend at least one evening to appreciate the atmosphere.
5. Samaria Gorge

At 16km, the Samaria Gorge is one of the longest gorges in Europe. We were impressed by the verticality of the rock faces, which reach a height of 500m at the narrowest point, the famous Iron Gates.
The full hike takes 5-7 hours of sustained effort and requires good physical condition. The trail passes through a variety of landscapes, from pine forests to arid zones. Don’t forget to book!

6. Pink beach of Elafonisi

Elafonisi offers a remarkable natural spectacle. The sand takes on a pinkish hue thanks to the fragments of shells and coral that make it up. We particularly enjoyed walking across the shallow lagoon that separates the main beach from the islet. The water is incredibly clear and warm. L
he area is protected under the Natura 2000 program, guaranteeing the preservation of this fragile ecosystem. Arrive early in the summer season, as the area attracts many visitors.
And if you can, stay until sunset (see our last photo in the series).
7. Seitan Limania beach – Cretan “fjord

Seitan Limania evokes a Norwegian fjord transposed to the Mediterranean. This narrow cove between two cliffs offers a spectacular setting. We recommend caution on the descent, as the path is steep and can be slippery.
Even if you don’t go downhill, it’s worth going all the way to the parking lot to admire the view!
The deep blue water contrasts magnificently with the rocky walls. The beach itself is small and can quickly become overcrowded in high season.
This is one of Crete’s most beautiful beaches (article to come).
8. Kourtaliotiko Gorge

The Kourtaliotiko gorge impresses with its vertiginous walls framing the road. We made several stops to admire the rock formations and the vultures soaring above the canyon.
You can already enjoy it thanks to the road that crosses it, but if you can, take the time to hike it.
9. Matala beach – Crete’s sunset photo

Matala is famous for its caves carved into the cliffs, which served as Roman tombs before welcoming hippies in the 1960s. We were captivated by the sunset over the ochre cliffs. The village retains a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere.
10. Fodele Church

The village of Fodele boasts a charming Byzantine church surrounded by orange groves. The green valley contrasts with the aridity of the surrounding hills. We enjoyed the freshness of this peaceful spot, far from the main tourist routes.
A slightly different landscape.
11. Knossos Palace – a major archaeological landscape

The archaeological site of Knossos is the most important testimony to Minoan civilization. We were fascinated by the scale of the palatial complex, which bears witness to an advanced society dating back to 2000 BC.
The reconstructions carried out by Sir Arthur Evans at the beginning of the 20th century are a source of debate among archaeologists, but they allow visitors to better imagine the splendour of the past (and they look great in photographs!).
Reserve at least 2 hours for your visit, and give preference to early opening hours.
We recommend a guided tour to better explore the site. See options.

12. Triopetra Beach

Triopetra takes its name from the three imposing rocks rising from the sea. This beach in southern Crete remains relatively untouched by mass tourism. We loved the wild feel of the place, where wind and waves constantly sculpt the landscape.
If, like us, you love rock formations, this is a must-see.
13. Cave of Zeus – underground landscapes of Crete

The Grotto of Psychro, commonly known as the Grotto of Zeus, is one of Crete’s most important mythological sites. According to legend, the god Zeus was born here and hid from his father Cronos. We were impressed by the stalactite and stalagmite formations that adorn the cave.
Beware, access requires physical effort.
14. Rethymnon Fort

Rethymnon’s Venetian fortress, called Fortezza, has dominated the town since the 16th century. We enjoyed a walk along the ramparts, which offer panoramic views of the sea and mountains. There are several buildings within the walls, including a former Ottoman mosque that has been converted into a concert hall.
Visit in the late afternoon for ideal light for your photos.
15. Xerokampos

Xerokampos is one of Crete’s most secluded destinations. This series of beaches in the south-east of the island attracts travellers in search of authenticity. We discovered several successive coves where the transparent water invites you to swim and snorkel.
The village itself remains tiny, with a few family-run tavernas lining the waterfront. And the winding road down is spectacular!
16. Gramvousa Island

The island of Gramvousa faces the lagoon of Balos, with a Venetian fortress at its summit. If you can, climb up to the ruins for a spectacular view of Balos and the northwest coast. One of Crete’s most impressive landscapes.
17. Vai Beach

Vai is home to Europe’s largest natural palm grove, comprising some 5,000 date palms from Crete. We were surprised by this unexpected tropical setting. The sandy beach stretches for several hundred meters, bordered by this forest of palm trees.
The beach can be very busy in summer, so we suggest a morning visit. And climb the stairs to the naturist beach to enjoy the view of the palm grove.
18. The island of Spinalonga – Crete’s historic landscape

The island of Spinalonga is steeped in history. This Venetian fortress served as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957. The imposing fortifications contrast with the intense blue of Elounda Bay.
Boats leave regularly from Plaka, Elounda and Agios Nikolaos to reach the island. The tour lasts around 1h30 and takes in the abandoned houses, the church and the old shops.
19. Lake Kournas

Lake Kournas offers a welcome change of scenery. This freshwater lake surrounded by hills creates a cool oasis. Several tavernas line the northern shore, where you can enjoy local specialties right on the water.
The site is particularly pleasant in spring when the vegetation is lush.
20. Malia Palace

The Minoan palace at Malia is the third most important site of this civilization after Knossos and Phaistos. We preferred Malia for its less reconstructed atmosphere than Knossos. The authentic ruins provide a better understanding of the original architecture. The palatial complex dates back to around 1900 BC and preserves remarkable features such as the kernos, a circular stone with 34 cavities probably used for offerings.
The proximity of the sea adds to the site’s charm. Visit early in the morning to avoid the heat.

21. Arkadi Monastery

The Arkadi Monastery is of major importance in Cretan history. In 1866, the monastery’s defenders chose to blow up the powder magazine rather than surrender to the Ottomans. It’s a place steeped in history.
The monastic buildings surround a peaceful courtyard planted with cypress trees. A small museum recalls the tragic events of 1866.
22. Botanical Garden of Crete

The Botanical Garden and Park of Crete covers 20 hectares between Chania and Rethymnon. We discovered an impressive collection of Mediterranean and tropical plants. The garden features over 20 thematic zones, including sections dedicated to aromatic plants, citrus fruits and vines.
The on-site restaurant offers dishes prepared with garden produce and a beautiful view.
23. Venetian ruins of Palaiochora: Castello Selino

The ruins of Castello Selino dominate the Palaiochora peninsula. This 13th-century Venetian fortress was destroyed by the pirate Barbarossa in 1539. We climbed up to the remains to admire the view over the two beaches that border the town.
To the east, the pebble beach, to the west, the sandy beach. It’s a place full of charm. Palaiochora itself retains a relaxed atmosphere.
24. Spili, a traditional mountain village

Spili is a mountain village renowned for its Venetian fountains. Nineteen lion heads spit cool, drinkable water along the main street. Spili’s surroundings reveal mountainous, verdant Crete. Fertile valleys intersect the hills, where olive and oak trees grow.
. This region offers a glimpse of rural Cretan life, far from the coastal tourist areas.
25. Mochlos

Mochlos is a small coastal village that has retained its authentic character. Family-run tavernas line the seafront, facing the islet of Mochlos, home to Minoan remains.
26. Chania lighthouse

The Venetian lighthouse at Chania is one of the oldest lighthouses in the Mediterranean still standing. Its construction dates back to the 16th century, although it was modified during the Ottoman period in the 19th century.
We enjoyed walking along the jetty to the lighthouse to observe the port from different angles. At sunset, the golden light sublimates the Claire stone lighthouse.
27. View of Marmara Beach and Gorge

The Marmara Gorge offers a less-frequented alternative to Samaria. The 5km route traverses a canyon with impressive walls.
Even if you don’t have the technique to explore it, the view from the boat that takes you to Loutro is impressive!
28. Roman ruins of Gortyna – ancient capital of Crete

Gortyna was the Roman capital of Crete and Cyrenaica. The archaeological site covers a vast area that is still partially excavated. The Roman odeon preserves the famous code of laws of Gortyna, engraved on stone and dating from the 5th century BC. A surprising discovery!
The remains of the theater, agora and thermal baths bear witness to the importance of this ancient city.
29. Melidoni cave

Back underground. The lesser-known Melidoni cave combines geological and historical interest. This vast cavity served as a refuge for 370 Cretans who perished asphyxiated by the Ottomans in 1824.
The stalactite and stalagmite formations are impressive. Access is easier from the village of Melidoni, located between Rethymnon and Heraklion.
30. Sunset at Elafonisi

Elafonisi at sunset is an unforgettable sight. The pink hues of the sand intensify under the golden light of the setting sun. We recommend that you stay until late afternoon, when most visitors have left and the beach is quiet again.
The shallow waters reflect the colors of the sky, creating an ever-changing natural tableau. It’s the perfect time to walk barefoot in the lagoon and contemplate the pure beauty of this exceptional place.
