Nestled in an authentic Cretan village just a few kilometers from Heraklion, we recommend staying atHotel Manili Boutique Suites & Villas. Although far from the city center of Crete’s capital, it’s close to the famous Knossos Palace, Greek vineyards and numerous natural attractions. We particularly appreciated the intimate, family atmosphere of this characterful establishment, where attentive, discreet service perfectly completes the experience. We had a wonderful time in his restaurant, which serves local cuisine made from fresh Cretan produce. Last but not least, its strategic location, superb decor and outdoor swimming pool won us over!

Staying downtown

The historic heart of Heraklion offers total immersion in the authentic atmosphere of the Cretan capital. We enjoyed getting lost in the maze of picturesque alleyways that come alive in the evening. Staying in the city center means you can easily explore Heraklion’s main attractions on foot, including the Archaeological Museum, Koules Fortress and Agios Minas Cathedral.

Located just 5km from the center of Heraklion, the Ammoudara area offers the perfect balance between urban proximity and seaside pleasures. We particularly appreciated its magnificent golden sandy beach stretching for several kilometers, ideal for families and water sports enthusiasts alike. This western part of the city is characterized by a more relaxed atmosphere, with beach restaurants and other seaside entertainment. You can also watch beautiful sunsets on the beach.
Benefits:
- Direct access to a beautiful sandy beach
- Close to many restaurants and beach bars
- Quieter environment than downtown, suitable for families
- Easier parking than in the city
Disadvantages:
- Need to rent a car or take public transport or a cab to visit the city center
- More touristy, less authentic area

Staying in the east of Heraklion, near Karteros Beach

Approximately 8km east of the town center, the Karteros area boasts a more unspoilt character and attractive natural surroundings. We were won over by the peaceful atmosphere of this less-frequented beach, which offers a semblance of a change of scenery. This accommodation option is particularly suited to travelers wishing to combine cultural discovery with seaside relaxation. The proximity of Heraklion international airport is also a practical advantage for short stays or late arrivals.
Benefits:
- Natural environment preserved and less urbanized
- Less crowded, more authentic beaches
- Generally more affordable accommodation rates
- Close to the airport (10min drive)
Disadvantages:
- Need to have a vehicle for travel
- More limited dining and entertainment options
- Fewer services and shops
- Possible noise pollution due to proximity to the airport

Staying in Heraklion’s hinterland

Heraklion’s rural surroundings reveal an authentic face of Crete, with vineyards, olive groves and unspoilt traditional villages. We were delighted by this immersion in the Cretan way of life, far from the usual tourist circuits. Charming accommodations, often in tastefully renovated old houses, offer a unique experience in communion with nature. Here, you can enjoy a warm welcome from the locals and savour a gastronomic experience far removed from the touristy restaurants.

Other useful tips to keep in mind

- Heraklion’s peak tourist season runs from June to September, with peak numbers in July and August. If you’re looking for a better balance between pleasant climate and tranquillity, opt for the months of May, early June or September and October.
- Parking can be tricky in Heraklion’s historic center. If you’re renting a car, check that your accommodation has private parking, or find out about nearby public parking lots. There are several paid underground parking lots near the center. We recommend the following Parking Theseus Heraklion Citylocated at Thiseos 18, 71201 Iraklio. It offers central parking and valet parking for your convenience.
- Local public transport (city buses) is a practical and economical option for exploring the city and surrounding area. Regular shuttle buses also link the town center to the main beaches. View route maps, timetables and fares here.

If you’re looking for a haven of peace by the sea, the Hotel Paralos Lifestyle Beach will win you over with its exceptional location directly on Ammoudara Beach. We were particularly taken with the relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere of this human-scale establishment. Its contemporary Balinese decor creates an elegant, soothing atmosphere. The spacious rooms, with their large picture windows, terraces and sometimes private swimming pools, offer a cosy place to relax after a day of sightseeing or a day on the beach. We loved the main pool, the restaurant and the bar, with their stunning views of the beach. We enjoyed a sunset cocktail here. If you’re looking to relax and unwind, you can opt for half-board and stay on the hotel premises.

The Hotel Manili Boutique Suite & Villa is made up of a group of old, whitewashed buildings dotted along an alleyway. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be seduced by the rural yet elegant ambience offered by this singular establishment. We immediately noticed the family atmosphere. Sometimes you have to step out into the street to reach certain facilities such as the swimming pool, reception or restaurant, offering immersion in the heart of Archanes and a more authentic, lively experience. We felt in a rare bubble of intimacy. Its location is ideal for discovering main attractions in and around Heraklion or relax by the pool. The establishment offers comfortable, pleasant and well-equipped rooms, suites and villas. Some have their own swimming pool and/or Jacuzzi with panoramic views. The beautiful pool is perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring.

6. Minoa Apartments

Why stay there?
Ideally located between the city center and the beach, Minoa Apartments offer a flexible and comfortable accommodation solution, ideal if you like to be independent. We loved the authentic, family atmosphere in this human-scale residence. The apartments are bright, functional and well-equipped. Each apartment has a kitchenette for preparing meals. But if you prefer a more relaxing stay, you can take advantage of the hotel’s breakfast menu. We enjoyed the swimming pool surrounded by palm trees, ideal for cooling off in the Cretan sunshine. Children will also love this hotel, which boasts a spacious wooded park with plenty of games for young and old. We think the Minoa Apartments are ideal for families looking to unwind.

It not only offers good value for money, but also attentive service and comfortable rooms. We recommend this establishment for your stay in Crete, if you’re looking for affordable accommodation offering pleasant rooms with fully-equipped kitchens. We felt right at home. The atmosphere at the AppartHotel Pavo Art in Heraklion is both sober and elegant. We particularly appreciated the works of art displayed in various parts of the common areas and rooms.
