This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Is it difficult to park in Chania?
Yes, parking in Chania does require some forethought. The old town and the Venetian Old Port form an almost entirely pedestrian zone, enclosed by automatic bollards and monitored by license-plate-reading cameras. During our visit, we noticed that the free parking lots closest to the center were fully booked very early in the morning. The situation becomes much tenser from June to September, when the number of visitors peaks, with a second wave of saturation in the early evening. Nevertheless, you’ll find practical solutions, provided you target the right areas and arrive early. We describe each option below, from free park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts to covered garages in the center.

Parking in Chania: summary
Careful street parking
On-street parking in Chania is based on an easy-to-remember color code. White lines indicate free public parking spaces, with no time limit, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Blue lines indicate paid parking limited to 4 hours, available Monday to Saturday from 7am to 9pm, and free on Sundays and public holidays. On site, we noticed that payment is mostly made via the official i-PARK Chania application or by cards sold at local kiosks. Don’t confuse it with the general Chania City app, which is a useful municipal tourist guide for locating parking lots in real time, but which does not manage payment for blue zones. We advise you to keep a few coins to one side, however, as the app, on which you’ll need to create an account first, sometimes doesn’t accept foreign bankcards and numbers. As for the yellow lines, avoid them at all costs: reserved for residents and deliveries, they can result in a fine and the immediate withdrawal of plates by the police.

Free parking
Good news: Chania is one of the cities where free parking is still possible. The municipality has set up park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts, linked to the old town by free electric shuttle buses every 20 minutes. This is the most relaxed option in summer, and we found it much more relaxing than turning off in the town center. On the immediate edge of the ramparts, several large open fields also offer free access on foot. Their only drawback: they fill up by mid-morning. If you want to park for free near the port, we recommend arriving before 9am. We’ll come back to these sites in more detail later in the article.

The main parking lots for tourists
- Parking Talos Square – Outdoor, 24h/24, free
Closest to the Venetian Old Port and the Lighthouse - Parking Relais Kladissos – Outdoor, 24h/24, free
Free electric shuttle to the center - Parking Apollon – Covered, 24h/24, paying
Ultra-central, at the foot of the Agora - Parking Plaza – Underground, chargeable
Ideal for Nea Chora beach and west of the old town
Details of each parking lot are given later in this article.
Prices are moderate: expect to pay around €0.80 per hour in municipal outdoor parking lots, around €1 per hour in on-street blue zones, and between €2.30 and €3 per hour in private covered garages. The latter offer sliding-scale daily rates, which are attractive if you leave your car overnight or for several days.

Essential tips
- In high season (June to September), the free parking lots near the center are saturated by 9:30 am. A second wave arrives around 7 p.m. for the evening stroll: aim for an early morning.
- If you are staying in Chania, ask your accommodation provider about parking options.
- The old town and the Venetian Old Port are almost 100% pedestrianized and enclosed by bollards: if your accommodation is located there, leave the car in a long-term parking lot on the outskirts and finish on foot.
- Download the Chania City application here: Supported by the municipality, this free app brings together a wealth of practical information and an interactive map of the city’s public and private parking lots. Although you can’t pay for parking (reserved for i-PARK), it’s still very practical for finding your way around.
- Always carry coins with you: the i-PARK Chania application can be unstable with foreign cards and phone numbers.

Where to park to get closer to specific places in Chania
Chania concentrates most of its attractions in the old town, but a few sites, such as the beaches, remain off-center. Here are our recommendations for each area.
See our article on Chania’s top attractions.
Where to park to visit the historic center: Agora and Place 1866
For strolling through the shopping streets, reaching the Agora (the Municipal Market currently under renovation) and Place 1866, the Apollon and Ermis private garages are the most convenient options. Both drop you off less than a 5-minute walk from the market and the first streets of the old town, so you don’t have to go round the center looking for a parking space. We particularly liked the fact that they’re all on one level, with no steep ramps, which makes getting out of the car a pleasure. If you prefer a free solution, the Fossé Est parking lot is nearby, but you need to arrive early. For a leisurely tour of the historic heart of the city, we clearly recommend a covered garage: you’ll save time and your mind will be lighter.

Where to park to visit the Venetian Old Port
The Venetian Old Port, dominated by its Lighthouse, is the city’s most visited attraction. There are two main options for getting up close and personal:
- Talos Square parking lot: free, 2-minute walk to port via west entrance (Topanas district)
- Parking Apollon: pay and covered, ultra-central, just a few minutes from the docks

Where can I park to visit Nea Chora beach?
To reach the beach of Nea Chora, to the west of the town center, the Parking Plaza is the obvious choice: located beneath the Sklavenitis complex, it’s a 10-minute walk from the old town and very close to the seafront. From the parking lot, you have easy access to tavernas and sandy beaches. We recommend it all the more as the lanes directly bordering the beach are narrow, quickly saturated in the late afternoon, and offer barely twenty parking spaces. For a day at the seaside followed by a stroll in town, this is in our opinion the best compromise between proximity and tranquility.

Where can I park for free in Chania?
Free options do exist in Chania, but they require a bit of organization. Here, we give you the most reliable low-cost alternatives, while remaining transparent about their constraints.
- Municipal Park & Ride facilities: the Kladissos parking lot (west entrance), the largest and most recommended, and the Markopoulou parking lot (east entrance) are served by the city’s free electric shuttles.
- Large plots of land bordering the port: Talos Square to the far west, the East Ditch (Kyprou Street), or the former Avea factory, a vast gravel area 8 to 10 minutes’ walk from the Venetian port (80 to 90 places).
- Residential streets (marked white or without lines): outlying districts such as Koum Kapi to the east, or streets set back from Nea Chora beach to the west, offer free parking, subject to availability.

Where to avoid parking in Chania?
Parking regulations in Chania are particularly strict. It’s best to be aware of the pitfalls before leaving the car anywhere, or risk financial penalties.
- Inside the city walls and the Venetian Old Port: strict pedestrian zone, blocked off by bollards or monitored by license-plate-reading cameras. The alleys are narrow cul-de-sacs. Any offender is liable to a heavy fine from the tourist police.
- Yellow road markings: reserved exclusively for residents and deliveries. The municipal police apply zero tolerance and frequently remove the plates, legally blocking a rental car in Greece.
- The alleys of Nea Chora beach in the late afternoon: traffic becomes infernal in summer. The micro-parking lot on the beach has only 20 spaces, and turning around is difficult.
- Weekly market areas (Laiki Agora): some streets, notably around the East Ditch on Saturdays, host farmers’ markets. Temporary signs are put up the night before, and parking the night before guarantees impoundment at dawn.

Frequently asked questions
Where to park without walking too far in Chania?
It all depends on your budget. As a free option, the Talos Square parking lot is the closest to the Venetian port, but requires you to arrive before 9 a.m. in summer. As a paid option, the private Apollon and Ermis garages are the most strategic choices: they drop you off less than a 5-minute walk from the Agora and the first shopping streets, without having to turn into town. For families with strollers or people with reduced mobility, we clearly recommend a covered, single-storey garage, which is more comfortable than the gravelled curbs.

Is there 24-hour parking in Chania?
Good news for travelers arriving at night or leaving early: several of Chania’s parking lots operate continuously, 7 days a week (Kladissos, Talos Square, Fossé Est, Apollon, Reggina). Self-service pay stations and on-street parking accept cash and credit cards, as well as the official i-PARK Chania mobile application.
Where is the cheapest parking in Chania?
If we exclude the 100% free parking lots (Kladissos, Talos Square, Fossé Est), the most economical option is on-street parking in the blue zone, managed by the municipality, at €0.80 per hour (limited to 4 consecutive hours). It even becomes completely free on Sundays and public holidays.
DISCOVER Chania

Is it possible to book parking in advance in Chania?
Public, municipal and on-street parking lots cannot be booked on a first-come, first-served basis. Large private garages such as Apollon or Ermis do not offer online reservations for short stays. On the other hand, some hotels in the old town have rare private micro-garages, such as Hotel Splanzia (23 Via Daskalogianni) or Hotel Porto Veneziano. We advise you to contact them directly when booking your accommodation, to guarantee a night spot or a long-term package.
How do I get to the center of Chania by free shuttle bus?
Yes, and it’s even our preferred solution in high season. From the Kladissos (west) and Markopoulou (east) park-and-ride facilities, free electric shuttle buses serve the center every 20 minutes, from 7am to 11pm, and until midnight in summer. This way, you can avoid traffic jams and the race to the square near the port. Just leave your car, hop on and enjoy the old town with peace of mind.
