Why we love it

Loutro is undoubtedly one of Crete’s most photogenic villages. Nestled in a protected bay with crystal-clear waters, this small fishing hamlet is only accessible by boat or on foot. We were immediately charmed by the setting, even if it is more touristy than inhabited by locals.
White houses with blue shutters are reflected in the turquoise water, creating an almost unreal picture. The absence of cars lends the area a rare tranquillity. We particularly enjoyed strolling along the waterfront, where traditional tavernas offer freshly caught fish.

The cobbled streets wind between stone houses. They offer picturesque vistas at every turn. The village is renowned for its weavers and embroiderers, which you can admire in the many craft stores.

We also enjoyed the panoramic views from the village heights.

Mochlos

Why we love it

Mochlos is a small fishing village that has managed to preserve its authentic character despite tourism. Facing the islet of Mochlos, where Minoan remains still stand, the village spreads its tavernas along a quiet seafront.
We particularly liked the relaxed atmosphere of the place, where locals still chat under the plane trees in the central square. The calm waters of the bay are inviting for a swim, while the tavernas offer fresh fish caught that very morning. It’s an ideal place to discover the Cretan way of life, far from the hustle and bustle of tourism.

Matala Bay

Why we love it

Matala has a unique history that sets it apart from other Cretan villages. Famous for its caves carved into the cliffs, the village was once a Roman resort before becoming a hippy hideaway in the 1960s and 1970s.
We were fascinated by the caves punctuating the cliffs overlooking the golden sandy beach.

The village retains its relaxed atmosphere, with colorful tavernas and handicraft stores. The beach itself is magnificent, framed by ochre cliffs that take on a golden hue at sunset.

We particularly enjoyed the long, grey pebble beach that stretches the length of the village, lined with family-run tavernas where local cuisine is prepared with care. The village is famous for its natural springs, which feed twenty-five lion heads carved in stone, from which fresh, pure water flows. The cobbled streets climb between traditional houses with flower-filled balconies, creating a bucolic atmosphere. Set in a sheltered bay on the south-east coast, it offers an authentic atmosphere far removed from mass tourism. We were seduced by the gentle way of life here, where locals still take the time to chat in the village square.

The seafront features tavernas serving freshly caught fish, while the sandy and pebbled beach invites you to swim in crystal-clear waters. We particularly appreciated the harmonious blend between the old village and the new buildings, which respect the local architecture. Tavernas line the waterfront, where you can enjoy grilled fish while admiring the boats in the harbor. The village’s two sandy beaches are ideal for swimming, protected from the waves by the configuration of the bay.

The ceramics produced here, from simple jars to elaborate decorative pieces, bear witness to skills handed down from generation to generation. And if you still have time, we also recommend the following villages.

11. Fodele

Fodele is a verdant village nestled in a lush valley a few kilometers northwest of Heraklion. This peaceful village is famous for being the presumed birthplace of the painter El Greco (Domínikos Theotokópoulos) in 1541. We were seduced by the freshness of this valley planted with orange trees and crossed by a small stream. The village is home to a house-museum dedicated to the famous artist, and a Byzantine church.

Fodele offers a relaxing, bucolic atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of the coast, where you can stroll through citrus orchards and discover local produce, including honey and the region’s famous oranges.

12. Kato Zakros

Kato Zakros occupies a unique position at the eastern end of Crete, where the island ends facing the Libyan Sea. This small coastal village (if you can call it a village) is dominated by its Minoan palace. Its seaside location testifies to the importance of maritime trade in Minoan civilization. The village itself is very, very peaceful, with just a few tavernas and lodgings.

The Gorge des Morts, which links the village to the upper plateau, makes for a spectacular hike. The pebble beaches offer crystal-clear waters for swimming.

13. Anogia

Perched on the slopes of Mount Psiloritis at an altitude of 740m, Anogia is a mountain village that played an important role in the Cretan resistance. Its tumultuous history has not dampened the independent spirit of its inhabitants. The village is renowned for its traditional music, textile crafts and cheeses.

Its narrow streets are charming

14. Vamos

Vamos is a remarkable example of a restored village that has preserved its authenticity while developing respectful tourism. The stone houses have been renovated using traditional techniques. The village offers the chance to discover rural Cretan life through agricultural and culinary activities.

15. Lákkoi

View of Lakkoi

Lákkoi is a small mountain village nestled on the Omalos plateau in the White Mountains. Perched at around 1050m above sea level, we particularly enjoyed the view of its church, with the mountains in the background.
