Our take: <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, the Melidoni Cave is worth a visit. We appreciated the size of its main chamber as well as the variety of its limestone formations. The site also stands out for its archaeological history and the ossuary that commemorates a significant episode in Cretan history, which gives the visit a depth not found in all of the island\u2019s caves. <br\/>Visiting at least one cave is <a href=\"https:\/\/cretelovers.com\/en\/best-things-to-do-crete-attractions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a must-do in Crete<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/North-Coast\/Melidoni-Cave\/i-PJBCHFq\/1\/MvLVv7KNq6ngfdcdw5dZhPxJvkXh2MtxzCrBNxwpH\/L\/Melidoni-cave-crete-greece-3820-L.jpg\" alt=\"Melidoni Cave - column\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is Melidoni Cave famous?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cave, also known as \u201cGerondospilios\u201d (the old cave), owes its fame to two distinct factors. First, it is renowned for its archaeological significance: it has yielded Neolithic tools as well as a bronze double-edged axe, now housed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, it is infamous for the massacre that took place there in the 19th century under Ottoman rule. Once you\u2019re in the village, signs will guide you to the site. The cave\u2019s natural coolness also makes it a pleasant place to visit during the hottest part of the day in the summer. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Length of visit and main difficulties<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allow between 20 and 30 minutes to explore the area open to the public. Access is via a staircase of about 40 steps, which may pose a challenge for people with limited mobility or who have trouble walking. The other areas of the cave\u2014such as the Crossroads (Stavrodromi), the Pashley Chamber, and the Hall of Curtains\u2014are closed to the public for reasons of archaeological preservation.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting with children<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No specific educational programs are mentioned for young visitors. However, the tour is still suitable for children, who will generally enjoy the cave\u2019s unique atmosphere and its impressive formations. Hussein Bey surrounded the site and demanded their surrender, which they refused. After several months of siege and unsuccessful attempts to dislodge them, the Ottomans finally set a massive fire at the entrance to the cave in January 1824.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deprived of air and surrounded by smoke, all the refugees perished.
