We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Visit the Malia Palace<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is the Malia Palace worth it? Our take: <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, the Palace of Malia is definitely worth a visit. We appreciated being able to walk around the site without having to climb any steep stairs, which makes it one of the most accessible Minoan ruins in Crete. Less crowded than Knossos, it retains a truly authentic feel. It\u2019s one of the best things to do in Malia and one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cretelovers.com\/en\/best-archaeological-sites-crete\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most beautiful archaeological sites in Crete<\/a>.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Malia\/Malia-Minoan-palace\/i-tSL3Mc7\/1\/NbJCkWsTkzgZ4DG8nSW3S2tJz5kNQN4XXsk4nP6R7\/L\/Malia-minoan-palace-crete-greece-7862-L.jpg\" alt=\"Malia Palace&#x2014;ruined walls with mountains in the background\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is the Malia Palace famous?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Palace of Malia is the third-largest Minoan palace on Crete, after those at <a href=\"https:\/\/cretelovers.com\/en\/visit-palace-knossos-heraklion\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2718\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Knossos<\/a> and Phaistos. According to mythology, it is said to have been the residence of Sarpedon, son of Zeus and Europa and younger brother of King Minos.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We find this legendary connection particularly interesting, as it links the site to the founding myths of Cretan civilization. The site is located right off the main road connecting Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos, making it easy to reach. In fact, it\u2019s one of the easiest Minoan ruins to navigate in all of Crete. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">  However, the site is largely exposed: be sure to bring water and sunscreen, as it can get hot quickly, especially in the summer.<br\/>The ground is relatively flat except in certain areas where rocks protrude slightly.<br\/>After rain, the ground can also get a bit muddy.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Malia\/Malia-Minoan-palace\/i-n8dzxRw\/1\/M7Hdr9dfqMTbFhHWZBX4jszNxcqcwVWSW8zrqzNcx\/L\/Malia-minoan-palace-crete-greece-7874-L.jpg\" alt=\"Malia Palace&#x2014;a slightly more challenging route\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advice on how to visit<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our tip: Start your tour at the small information building at the site entrance. There, you\u2019ll find helpful explanations and a scale model to help you get your bearings before setting out to explore the ruins. We strongly recommend that you stop there first before exploring the ruins\u2014this is our top tip for getting the most out of your visit.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Malia\/Malia-Minoan-palace\/i-PNRTqbD\/1\/Mbj7TLSGdmJfrg6kkvK4CjsJ3CX6mfKvfSJh2mBSq\/L\/Malia-minoan-palace-crete-greece-7925-L.jpg\" alt=\"Malia Museum\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In particular, you&#8217;ll find a scale model of the palace there, which is especially helpful for visualizing what the building looked like in its heyday, since\u2014unlike Knossos\u2014the archaeological site at Malia has not been reconstructed.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Malia\/Malia-Minoan-palace\/i-GBGv4RN\/1\/L4F2Sv9KrWjNMXskbBGxvcQ7VQ8nR9cTPzbCMWXPx\/L\/Malia-minoan-palace-crete-greece-7854-L.jpg\" alt=\"Malia Palace - Museum of the Archaeological Site\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ruins have remained just as the archaeologists uncovered them during the excavations. We found this model much more informative than the simple explanatory panels found at other Minoan ruins on the island. The most valuable artifacts unearthed at the site, such as the famous gold bee pendant, are on display at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, about 34 km away.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The exterior of the palace<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Walls, the Kouloures, and the East Shops<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you enter through the West Courtyard, you\u2019ll first walk alongside some of the tallest walls of any Minoan ruins on Crete, which helps you better imagine the palace\u2019s original scale. We were surprised by how well-preserved they are\u2014still visible to a height of more than two meters in some places.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Malia\/Malia-Minoan-palace\/i-Mqj2fzv\/1\/LnGSg8f4NMjsxvVzcsdL6TfGvsKNtW7vHwT8hLs9p\/L\/Malia-minoan-palace-crete-greece-7859-L.jpg\" alt=\"Malia Palace - Walls\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little further on are the Kouloures, the large circular pits typical of Minoan architecture. The Palace of Malia has six of them\u2014now filled in\u2014which archaeologists generally interpret as ancient grain silos.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Malia\/Malia-Minoan-palace\/i-rbnGFqc\/1\/MKnbMczs6rXq4cRGPhHFMvP4cDSsw5SDm6PhQhB2r\/L\/Malia-minoan-palace-crete-greece-7556-L.jpg\" alt=\"Kouloures\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The central courtyard, the main staircase, and the Kernos<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll also discover the palace\u2019s central courtyard, which runs north-south and is 48 meters long and 23 meters wide. This is the heart of all the Minoan palaces on Crete, and the one at Malia already existed during the time of the first palace. We enjoyed looking at the start of the main staircase on the side\u2014which once led to the upper floor\u2014next to what archaeologists call the loggia.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Malia\/Malia-Minoan-palace\/i-Kzm29Jm\/1\/MHGR3g6WwLFMQRN9DbsvSq5wKs8wGk5S2dDvbRqBr\/L\/Malia-minoan-palace-crete-greece-7884-L.jpg\" alt=\"Staircase and Loggia\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look for the Kernos on the courtyard floor: this circular stone, 90 cm in diameter and pierced with 34 small cup marks, is one of a kind and was likely used for ritual offerings.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Malia\/Malia-Minoan-palace\/i-shtXTLq\/1\/LZdK9F2SzgQHvkMb3z4mqqGPb4qXhrZM7Q32dFWzC\/L\/Malia-minoan-palace-crete-greece-7886-L.jpg\" alt=\"Court\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pithoi<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also really liked the reconstructed pithoi scattered throughout the ruins. These huge terracotta jars could reach up to 2 meters in height and were used to store olive oil and other foodstuffs. For example, the eastern storerooms: there you can still see the channels carved into the ground, designed to collect any liquids that might have leaked from the large storage jars. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Malia\/Malia-Minoan-palace\/i-MpwJtBZ\/1\/Kdb9qzFkfNfkh6MntMSq4TfXLs3DxjWjN6WfNwFPB\/L\/Malia-minoan-palace-crete-greece-7878-L.jpg\" alt=\"East Stores\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hypostyle Crypt and the Polythyron<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the northwest of the palace lies the hypostyle crypt, a complex comprising two underground chambers with benches, along with several storage rooms. We found this space particularly intriguing: according to some interpretations, it may have served as a meeting place, perhaps for a select council responsible for the city\u2019s affairs.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Malia\/Malia-Minoan-palace\/i-dMZxcMJ\/1\/MRrzRt65z5Z6M2zCcvxntFmdqVLJXH7DfK5gdLHZv\/L\/Malia-minoan-palace-crete-greece-7909-L.jpg\" alt=\"map of the covered area\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the palace\u2019s royal apartments, take note of the polythyron: this system of walls pierced with multiple openings made it possible to separate or open up rooms as needed\u2014a characteristic feature of Minoan architecture that is also found at Knossos. It is also a covered area. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Malia\/Malia-Minoan-palace\/i-gmd9wqS\/1\/L2qXjZXJqN6p6cb6qZCDqqScsXVmtpXrgVszKkSHS\/L\/Malia-minoan-palace-crete-greece-7916-L.jpg\" alt=\"Crossing to the Mu neighborhood\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We enjoyed discovering a completely different side of Minoan civilization there\u2014one focused more on daily life and craftsmanship than on royal splendor. The site has yielded hundreds of ceramic pieces as well as 150 seals from the seal workshop, which have helped identify a style of engraving unique to Malia.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will also see the remains of pottery, weaving, and metalworking workshops, as well as storage rooms where agricultural products such as oil, wine, and grain were kept. This area was destroyed by a fire at the same time as the first palace. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\"
