It\u2019s the perfect length of time to balance exploring historical sites, relaxing, and taking day trips into the Cretan countryside. <\/p>\n\n Many of the attractions are located in the old town, so they\u2019re very close to one another. This makes it much easier to plan your days exploring the city\u2019s heritage sites. To help you find your way as you read our itinerary below, here\u2019s our map of the main tourist attractions in Rethymno: <\/p>\n\n The historic center of Rethymno is easy to explore on foot, with its cobblestone streets and main landmarks just a few minutes\u2019 walk from one another. For trips to the beach or excursions into the countryside, however, a car remains the most flexible option: city buses also run between downtown and the beach areas, but they limit your freedom of movement. We recommend renting a car for at least part of your stay, especially for days spent in Arkadi, Chania, or Heraklion. Parking in the old town is limited: opt for the parking lots along the coastal road or the municipal parking lot near the port, and arrive early in the morning during peak season to find a spot. You can, of course, switch the order of the days depending on the weather or your preferences at the time. <\/p>\n\n To kick off this week in Rethymno, head to the city\u2019s must-see attraction: the Fortezza. Perched on Paleokastro Hill and overlooking the city, this star-shaped citadel is one of the largest Venetian fortresses in Crete, built in the late 16th century to protect the city from Ottoman attacks and pirates. You\u2019ll enjoy a panoramic view of the Cretan Sea and the rooftops of the old town, as well as the Sultan Ibrahim Mosque, a former Ottoman building whose dome stands proudly at the center of the enclosure. <\/p>\n\n We were impressed by the size of the enclosure and by the remains of barracks, cisterns, and powder magazines that bear witness to several centuries of occupation. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours to explore the entire site, and be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring water, especially in the summer: the terrain is sloped and uneven in places, which limits access for people with limited mobility. We recommend scheduling your visit in the morning to enjoy the beautiful morning light from the ramparts. <\/p>\n\n Right across from the entrance to the Fortezza, the Rethymno Archaeological Museum houses collections spanning more than 5,000 years of history: Minoan pottery, votive statuettes, and terracotta sarcophagi, all from the region. We found the explanations to be clear and well-organized, making the visit accessible even without prior knowledge. Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour for your visit; note that the museum is closed on Tuesdays and admission is about \u20ac5. <\/p>\n\n Just a short walk from the Fortezza, end your day at the Despokito Pools, nestled among the rocks at the foot of the ramparts. These small natural coves form pools of turquoise water where locals love to cool off. Access is via rocks and stone-carved steps, which are not suitable for people with limited mobility; water shoes are recommended. Please note that there are no food or drink options on site, so be sure to bring something to drink. <\/p>\n\n The Venetian Harbor of Rethymno is one of the most photographed spots in the city. This small, semicircular harbor, built in the 13th century by the Venetians, has retained its authentic character: colorful fishing boats rock gently on the water, and the taverns lining the quay come alive as the day goes on. At the end of the stone pier, you\u2019ll see the Egyptian lighthouse, built in the 19th century during the Ottoman period, which has become one of the city\u2019s symbols. Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour for the walk; admission is free. <\/p>\n\n Continue on to the Rimondi Fountain, one of the Old Town\u2019s most iconic landmarks. Built in 1626 by the Venetian rector Alvise Rimondi, it was used to supply the residents with drinking water: three carved lion heads allow water to flow into basins, framed by Corinthian columns. We appreciated the finesse of these architectural details in Plateia Petychaki, a lively little square worth visiting both day and night. <\/p>\n\n Nearby, the Neratze Mosque is recognizable by its minaret, the tallest in Rethymno and one of the few still standing in Crete. Originally a Venetian church dedicated to Santa Maria, it was converted into a mosque in the 17th century by the Ottomans; the building now houses a music conservatory. We were struck by the harmonious blend of Venetian elements and Ottoman additions, visible from Vernardou Street. <\/p>\n\n End the afternoon with a stroll through the old town, a labyrinth of narrow streets where you\u2019ll come across Venetian pointed-arch doors, carved Ottoman wooden balconies, and facades covered in bougainvillea. Look for the Megali Porta, the former entrance to the walled city, and the 16th-century Loggia, once a gathering place for Venetian nobles. You\u2019ll also notice touches of contemporary art scattered throughout the streets\u2014colorful murals and modern sculptures that contrast with the ancient heritage. <\/p>\n\n If you have time in the city center, be sure to seek out the Chapel of Agios Spyridon, tucked away beneath the fortress in the narrow streets of the old town\u2014many visitors don\u2019t take the short detour to see it. The interior, modest yet well-maintained, houses icons and frescoes that highlight the importance of the Orthodox faith in everyday Cretan life, in a contemplative atmosphere quite different from that of the city\u2019s larger churches. <\/p>\n\n Another option is the Veli Pasha Mosque, located on Four Martyrs Square, which houses the Rethymno Paleontological Museum. We were surprised to discover fossils of dwarf elephants and hippopotamuses that inhabited Crete thousands of years ago\u2014an unusual perspective on the island, quite different from the Minoan or Venetian ruins. <\/p>\n\n See all our tips<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n On this third day, you\u2019ll head out of Rethymno to one of Crete\u2019s most historic sites. The Arkadi Monastery is much more than a place of worship: it symbolizes the Cretan people\u2019s resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Founded in the 16th century, it experienced a tragic episode in 1866, when its besieged defenders chose to blow up the powder magazine rather than surrender. We were struck by the beauty of the 17th-century Baroque fa\u00e7ade, which stands out elegantly against the Cretan hinterland. <\/p>\n\n You can visit the main church and its frescoes, the inner courtyard, and the small museum that chronicles the siege and the Cretan resistance. The monastery is located about 20 km southeast of Rethymno, about a 30-minute drive away. Allow half a day in total: a 30-minute drive from Rethymno, plus 1 to 1.5 hours at the site. We think the drive itself, through countryside dotted with ancient olive trees, is already part of the fun of the excursion. View organized tours to the Arkadi Monastery<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n After visiting the Arkadi Monastery, head west again to reach Lake Kournas. The two sites aren\u2019t exactly in the same area, but it\u2019s still possible to visit both in a single day by car. Allow about 50 minutes to an hour for the drive between Arkadi and the lake. This natural setting stands in stark contrast to the beaches and gorges that typically dominate the island\u2019s landscape. Surrounded by lush green hills, it offers a peaceful atmosphere\u2014a welcome respite after a morning packed with history. The lake is home to a rare species of freshwater turtle that you may spot as you approach the shores, and you can rent a pedal boat right there on site. <\/p>\n\n You can enjoy a late lunch at one of the lakeside taverns, which serve simple, hearty fare in an unpretentious setting. This excursion is particularly well-suited for families and those looking for a day that doesn\u2019t involve intense physical exertion. From Rethymno, it\u2019s about a 1-hour drive (65 km) west\u2014an ideal distance for a day trip. Its semicircular Venetian harbor, pastel-colored facades, and the blend of Venetian, Ottoman, and Byzantine architectural heritages make it a destination in its own right. The Venetian lighthouse, the arsenals, and the Janissary Mosque add to the richness of the scene. <\/p>\n\n We were captivated by the atmosphere of the old town, especially along the harbor in the late afternoon, when the golden light illuminates the facades and the taverns come to life. Beyond the harbor, the Splanzia neighborhood\u2014which is less touristy\u2014is worth a visit for its shaded square and authentic caf\u00e9s. <\/p>\n\n In the afternoon, choose between the Maritime Museum and the Archaeological Museum depending on your interests, then continue your stroll along the waterfront. You\u2019ll also be able to see seven of the seventeen Venetian arsenals that are still visible. End the day with a drink overlooking the sea at Koum Kapi, or, if you\u2019d like to go for a swim, head to Nea Chora Beach. A full day is ideal for enjoying Chania at a leisurely pace; the KTEL bus also runs regularly between the two cities for those who prefer not to drive. See organized tours to Chania from Rethymno<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n The Mili Gorges offer a nature getaway just 5 km south of Rethymno. This trail winds through a lush canyon along a stream lined with plane trees and oleanders, and passes by the ruins of several stone water mills that give the village of Mili its name. We found this hike refreshing and a welcome change of pace, far from the hustle and bustle of the coast. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the round trip\u2014preferably in the morning during the summer\u2014and there\u2019s a tavern in the village where you can grab a bite to eat. See guided tours of the Mili Gorges<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n To continue your day, head to the village of Roussospiti, perched in the hills about a 10-minute drive away, nicknamed the \u201cbalcony of Rethymno\u201d for the spectacular view it offers of the city, the coast, and the Cretan Sea. There, you can take in the panoramic view before having lunch at one of the village\u2019s taverns. <\/p>\n\n After two action-packed days of sightseeing, it\u2019s time to relax. Rethymno Beach stretches for about 12 km of golden sand east of the old town, making it one of the longest sandy beaches in Crete. We appreciated how easy it was to get there from downtown and the variety of atmospheres in different sections: the area near the harbor is livelier, while the sections further east are quieter. The water is shallow for the first few meters, making it ideal for families. <\/p>\n\n You’ll find areas equipped with lounge chairs and umbrellas, as well as open sections. It’s a 5-minute walk from the old town, or you can drive east along the coastal road, where parking is available. <\/p>\n\n Pr\u00e9veli Beach is one of the most photographed beaches in Crete, and for good reason: its palm-fringed lagoon, formed by the Kourtali\u00f3tis River as it flows into the sea, creates a landscape that\u2019s unique in the Mediterranean. Before heading down to the beach, stop at the Preveli Monastery, an Orthodox religious site perched on the hillside that offers a panoramic view of the Libyan Sea. The monastery is open to visitors. The drive from Rethymno takes about 50 minutes to 1 hour. <\/p>\n\n We found this spot particularly exotic, with its palm trees whose roots dip right into the freshwater lagoon, facing the turquoise sea. The contrast between the mountainous hinterland, the canyon, and the fine-sand beach is striking, and we highly recommend setting aside some time to go for a swim. You can reach the beach on foot via a trail from the parking lot\u2014a 20-minute descent, though the climb back up is more challenging: be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and bring plenty of water. See the options for visiting Pr\u00e9veli Beach and its monastery<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n Please be aware that detours and searching for a parking spot can make the day longer during peak season. The day trip is still accessible, but the descent\u2014and especially the climb back up\u2014can be challenging with young children or for people who have difficulty walking. <\/p>\n\n Heraklion<\/a>, the capital of Crete, is about a 1-hour-and-15-minute drive (80 km) east of Rethymno. For our final day, we headed to the Palace of Knossos<\/a>. This archaeological site has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, several millennia before the construction of the great Minoan palace we visit today. We were fascinated by the partial reconstructions carried out by archaeologist Arthur Evans in the early 20th century, which help us visualize the scale of the Minoan palace. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the visit, and plan to arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds at the site. View organized tours to the Palace of Knossos<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n In the city, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum<\/a> houses one of the world\u2019s largest collections of Minoan artifacts. We recommend combining both visits into a full, well-rounded day. If you have time and energy left, finish with a stroll around the old harbor and the Koules Fortress, or head to the Morosini Fountain in the city center. This packed excursion is a great way to end the week on a cultural and historical note. <\/p>\n\n If time or your interests allow, there are several other sites that nicely complement the heritage sites you\u2019ve already visited. The Historical and Folklore Museum, housed in a beautiful Venetian mansion, traces daily life in Crete through traditional costumes, farming tools, and embroidered textiles. The Ecclesiastical Museum, located near the cathedral, displays religious icons, manuscripts, and liturgical objects. The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete showcases works by contemporary Cretan and Greek artists in a bright, airy space\u2014a delightful surprise for lovers of contemporary art. <\/p>\n\n A little further on, in the village of Chromonastiri, the Chromonastiri Military Museum traces the military history of Crete, particularly the Cretan resistance during World War II. As for places of worship, the Cathedral of the Presentation of the Virgin and the Cathedral of the Four Martyrs are also worth a visit, as is the nearby Monastery of Agia Irini, surrounded by olive trees. <\/p>\n\n Rethymno is a great destination for family<\/a> vacations. In addition to the main beach and the Despokito Pools, there are several other beaches within easy reach of the city: Pervolia, Missiria, Koumbes, and Platanes offer quieter alternatives, depending on the day. Note that it\u2019s not uncommon in Crete for restaurants not to have a separate children\u2019s menu, but most are happy to adjust portion sizes or offer simple dishes upon request. <\/p>\n\n For meals, Taverna Poppy in Adelianos Kampos offers a down-to-earth, family-friendly atmosphere with homemade Cretan dishes. Othonas Taverna and Lemonokipos, both located in the old town, are also great choices for families thanks to their fresh ingredients and pleasant setting when it\u2019s not too hot. <\/p>\n\n Rethymno is full of great restaurants<\/a>, especially in the old town and around the Venetian harbor. We tried Restaurant To Sefteri, a small, family-run Cretan tavern tucked away at 24 Fotaki Street, easily recognizable by the colorful umbrellas on its terrace. There, we enjoyed spicy dolmades, moussaka, and a dessert featuring bougatsa, a filo pastry that\u2019s very common in Crete. <\/p>\n\n Our other favorite spot, Taverna Poppy, is located in Adelianos Kampos, east of Rethymno: don\u2019t be fooled by its somewhat commercial exterior\u2014the family-friendly atmosphere inside is much warmer than it seems. We recommend the feta se filo, the fasolakia, and especially the portokalopita, an orange cake served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. <\/p>\n\n To round out your selection, we also recommend Restaurant Avli, set in a historic Venetian setting and offering modernized Cretan cuisine paired with an excellent wine selection (reservations required<\/a>), Lemonokipos Restaurant and its inner courtyard shaded by lemon trees (reserve<\/a>), as well as Prima Plora Restaurant, for a seaside setting and cuisine focused on local and organic ingredients (reserve<\/a>). For fish and seafood, head to the old port and Zefyros Fish Taverna (Facebook page<\/a>) or Achinos Restaurant, located in a historic building (reservations required<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n If you have more time, Rethymno is a great base for exploring even further afield. The Samaria Gorge, designated a national park, is one of the longest and most impressive hikeable gorges in Europe, with a 16-kilometer trail connecting the Omalos Plateau to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli: a challenging hike lasting 5 to 8 hours, open from May through October. Balos Lagoon and Elafonissi Beach, in the far northwest and west of Crete, are among the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean, with their shallow turquoise waters and, in the case of Elafonissi, sand with a pinkish hue. <\/p>\n\n Matala<\/a>, on the south coast, is a unique place famous for its caves carved into the cliff\u2014originally Neolithic and Roman tombs, later inhabited by a hippie community in the 1960s and 1970s. Spili and its fountain with twenty-five stone lion heads, just a 35-minute drive away, are also worth a visit, as are the Botanical Garden of Crete with its three climate zones, or the Nida Plateau and Mount Ida for a complete change of scenery at high altitude. <\/p>\n\n Finally, if you\u2019d like to continue on to Santorini, keep in mind that the island is about a 2.5-hour ride by high-speed ferry from the port of Heraklion, plus a 1-hour-and-15-minute drive from Rethymno. We recommend spending at least one night there rather than attempting a day trip, so you can enjoy the sunset from Oia without rushing.
