The town&#8217;s dense historical heritage &#8211; fortress, Venetian port, converted mosques, 17th-century fountain &#8211; doesn&#8217;t need the summer sun to be impressive. You&#8217;ll find that the off-season brings out the best in the old town&#8217;s architecture and atmosphere, without the influx of tourists. Museums stay open, restaurants stay open, and you can get around at your own pace. If you&#8217;re looking for a quieter, truer Crete, winter is a good window. Temperatures range from 10\u00b0C (50\u00b0F) to 18\u00b0C (64.4\u00b0F). Daytime temperatures generally oscillate between 12\u00b0C (53.6\u00b0F) and 18\u00b0C (64.4\u00b0F), making for pleasant strolls around the old town and along the seafront. At night, the thermometer can fall to around 8\u00b0C (46.4\u00b0F) to 10\u00b0C (50\u00b0F). The city offers enough content for two or three days, without depending on summer activities linked to the sea. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exploring the Fortezza<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s the starting point for every visit! Dominating the town from the hill of Paleokastro, the Fortezza is a citadel built in the late 16th century by the Venetians to defend Rethymnon from Ottoman attacks and pirates. Its star-shaped layout, thick walls and the Sultan Ibrahim Mosque &#8211; a former Ottoman mosque whose dome occupies the center of the site &#8211; make it a dense place, steeped in successive layers of history. We were struck by the sheer size of the enclosure and the quality of the view over the Cretan Sea from the ramparts. In winter, the absence of crowds means you can explore the remains of the barracks, cisterns and powder magazines at your own pace.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fortezza can be reached on foot from the old town in 5 minutes. Allow 1h to 1h30 for a complete tour. Here, the atmosphere is more relaxed: the quays are clear, and you can really take in the sights without the hustle and bustle. At the end of the stone jetty stands the Egyptian lighthouse, erected in the 19th century during the Ottoman period &#8211; and now one of the city&#8217;s visual symbols. You&#8217;ll discover objects from the Neolithic, Minoan, Roman and Byzantine periods, including finely decorated pottery, votive statuettes and terracotta sarcophagi. We found the scenography clear and accessible, even for visitors with no prior knowledge of Cretan archaeology. You&#8217;ll find that this visit ties in well with that of the Fortezza, just opposite. Among the architectural landmarks, the Megali Porta &#8211; the ancient entrance to the Venetian fortified city &#8211; and the 16th-century Loggia, a meeting place for Venetian nobles, deserve particular attention. We were also surprised by the touches of contemporary art scattered around the streets: colorful wall frescoes, unexpected sculptures in the backstreets. The Rimondi Fountain, built in 1626 by the Venetian rector Alvise Rimondi, is one of the best-preserved public fountains in Crete: three lion heads carved in stone, framed by Corinthian columns, once supplied the inhabitants with water. It stands on Plateia Petychaki, a small square lined with caf\u00e9s &#8211; ideal for a break. You&#8217;ll appreciate the finesse of the carved details, all the better in winter without the summer rush.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearby, the Neratze Mosque can be recognized by its minaret &#8211; the highest in the city and one of the few still standing in Crete. Originally a Venetian church dedicated to Santa Maria, it was converted into a mosque in the 17th century by the Ottomans. Today, it houses a music conservatory. In winter, swimming is not on the agenda for most travellers because of the water temperature, but the walk along this wide sandy strip is still very pleasant. The part close to the port is busier; the stretches to the east are quieter. We liked this way of skirting the sea without any particular objective, with the Fortezza as a backdrop. The trail follows a watercourse through a canyon of vegetation, passing the remains of several stone watermills &#8211; hence the name of the village (myli means &#8220;mill&#8221; in Greek). There&#8217;s also a small chapel and stone bridges along the way. Allow 2h to 3h round trip. Access is free; the trail starts from the village of Mili, accessible by car.
