Visiting Heraklion in winter is absolutely worthwhile. The Cretan capital is often associated with the summer season, but it reveals itself in a different light between November and March. We enjoyed strolling through the narrow streets of the historic center without the crowds, entering the museums without queuing, and taking the time to observe every detail of its Venetian and Byzantine monuments. With temperatures ranging from 10°C (50°F) to 17°C (62.6°F), you can walk comfortably all day long. Accommodation prices are considerably more affordable than in high season. We recommend that you bring a raincoat and a few extra layers: mornings can be cool, but afternoons are often milder. Heraklion in winter is also a city that offers itself to you at a more human pace.

Benefits

Museums and archaeological sites are much less crowded than in summer, making for a much more relaxed visit.

Mild temperatures (10-17°C / 50-62.6°F) are ideal for exploring the city on foot.

Accommodation rates are reduced in low season.

The main museums, including the Archaeological Museum and the Koules Fortress, remain open throughout the winter.

The local atmosphere is more authentic: you rub shoulders with the locals as they go about their daily business.

The festive season adds a festive dimension to the city.

Disadvantages

Some seaside restaurants and tourist establishments close during the low season.

Museum and site opening times are shorter than in summer.

Days are shorter, which limits the time for outdoor exploration.

Rainfall is more frequent: expect up to 9 days of rain per month.

Swimming in the sea is out of the question, with water temperatures hovering around 13°C (55.4°F).

Some boat trips and water sports are not available in winter.

WHERE TO STAY IN Heraklion

Our favorites: neighborhoods and hotels

Downtown
GDMMegaron Hotel – Temperatures generally oscillate between 10°C (50°F) and 17°C (62.6°F) during the day, with cooler nights. Rainfall is heavy, with a maximum of 9 days per month, but often alternates with sunny spells. We advise you to bring warm clothing, a light raincoat and good walking shoes. Sunny days, frequent even in January and February, allow you to enjoy the terraces and stroll through the historic center without difficulty. Snowfall is exceptional at lower altitudes, but the island’s mountain ranges receive it regularly, offering a contrasting landscape with the sea below.

RENT YOUR CAR IN Crete

Our preferred agency is Rental Center Crete
everything is included in the price and the service is excellent. Museums, Venetian and Byzantine monuments, historic alleyways and gourmet restaurants are accessible all year round. Here are our suggestions for making the most of the city in winter.

Explore the old town and Venetian heritage

In the heart of Heraklion, four and a half centuries of Venetian occupation (14th-17th centuries) have left a visible architectural imprint on every street corner. Start with the Morosini Fountain – known as the Lion Fountain – on Eleftheriou Venizelou Square, erected in 1628 and adorned with sculpted lions, the emblem of the Venetian Republic. Nearby, the Loggia, a 17th-century Renaissance building, is also worth a visit. Formerly a meeting hall for the Venetian aristocracy, it now houses the town hall. Its elegant arcades and finely crafted facade illustrate the Italian influence on the city. In winter, these monuments can be visited without the pressure of large tourist groups, making it a much more pleasant experience. Book your guided city tour now!

Visit the Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is one of the Cretan capital’s must-sees, whatever the season. It houses one of the world’s largest collections of Minoan artefacts – the civilization that has shaped Crete since more than 3,500 BC. We were struck by the astonishingly brightly colored frescoes on Knossos, by the finesse of the “Snake Goddess” (2nd millennium BC) and by the mysterious disc on Phaistos, whose hieroglyphics remain undeciphered to this day.
In winter, the museum is open Monday to Tuesday and Thursday to Sunday from 8.30am to 3.30pm, and on Wednesday from 10am to 5pm. Allow between 1h30 and 3h for your visit, depending on your level of interest. Book your audioguide tickets now to avoid the queues!

Discover Knossos Palace

Just 5 km south of Heraklion, the Knossos Palace is Crete’s most important archaeological site – and one of the most fascinating in Europe. Considered the oldest urban site on the continent, it represents the center of Minoan civilization, whose origins date back to over 7,000 BC. We were captivated by the myths that originated here: the Labyrinth, the Minotaur, Daedalus and Icarus. The palace, built around 1,900 B.C., covered an area of 20,000 m² and had several floors richly decorated with frescoes. Fascinating, isn’t it?
In winter, the site is open daily from 8am to 5pm (closing probably at 3pm on weekends). A combined ticket with the Archaeological Museum is available. Allow 2 to 3 hours on site. Book your guided tour tickets now!

Explore Koules Fortress

Head for the Koules Fortress, built by the Venetians between 1523 and 1540. A symbol of Heraklion, standing at the entrance to the historic port, this imposing structure was designed to protect the city and its maritime activities from Ottoman threats. We recommend that you climb its ramparts to enjoy an expansive view of the Aegean Sea and the rooftops of the Cretan capital. You’ll notice that the view is particularly beautiful in winter, when the light is soft and the sky is often clear. The fortress also hosts exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year. Opening times vary greatly from month to month: visit the official website for more information here.

Visit the Kotsanas Museum

The Kotsanas Museum, located in the historic center near the Koules Fortress, invites you to take an original plunge into the technological ingenuity of ancient Greece. We loved this visit! You’ll discover working reconstructions of machines and inventions created over 2,000 years ago: Antikythera’s astronomical computer – considered the first analog computer in history – Archimedes’ mechanisms or Heron of Alexandria’s automated theater. The interactive aspect is a real highlight: you can handle some of the replicas and watch demonstrations.
In winter (November to April), the museum is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm, and at weekends from 10am to 5pm. Visit the official website for more info here.

Discover the Museum of the History of Crete

To complement the visit to the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the History of Crete sheds light on more recent periods on the island, from Byzantine times to the present day. The chronological presentation combines objects, documents and reconstructions. Models of Venetian ships, old maps and period weapons help visitors follow the turbulent centuries of Cretan history. In winter (October to March), the museum is open daily from 9am to 5pm. This small museum houses a collection of traditional Cretan and Greek musical instruments, retracing several centuries of musical practice. What really sets it apart is that the visit is guided by the owner himself – a passionate musician who plays the instruments and sings to illustrate his explanations. We liked the warm atmosphere and generous welcome, a far cry from cold museography.
In winter (September to April), the museum is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 3.30pm. Dedicated to Saint Minas, patron saint of the city, it is distinguished by its neo-Byzantine architecture with classical influences: a vast dome, two bell towers and a sober facade that dominates the square in which it stands. The interior is well worth a visit, with detailed frescoes, Orthodox icons and an immense bronze chandelier. We also recommend a visit to the nearby Agios Minas Church, built in 1735 – it miraculously survived the earthquake of 1856 and preserves 17th-century icons. Admission to the cathedral is free.

Stroll through the narrow streets of the historic center

Getting lost in the narrow streets of Heraklion is one of the best ways to grasp the diversity of influences that have shaped the city. We were surprised by the density of monuments scattered around a very compact perimeter: theChurch of Agios Titos, founded in the 10th century and rebuilt during the Ottoman occupation; the Basilica of Agios Markos, a former Venetian Catholic cathedral converted into an art gallery; and the Monastery of St. Peter and St. Paul, now a municipal cultural center. Shopping street 1866 and its traditional market, with its scent of Cretan herbs and spices, is also well worth a visit. In winter, this walk can be enjoyed without excessive heat and in a relaxed atmosphere. In 2023, the city was named one of the 7 World Cities of Gastronomy, in recognition of the excellence of its culinary tradition. Local products – olive oil, seasonal vegetables, cheeses, aromatic herbs – are at the heart of traditional recipes. We enjoyed tasting dakos, spanakopita and dolmades, accompanied by Cretan wines grown in the region since ancient times. Three addresses particularly stood out for us: Café Tiny Rebels, a vegan café-brocante with a vintage atmosphere, Restaurant Peskesi, where all produce comes from the restaurant’s own farm, and Restaurant Xalali, which focuses on authenticity and traditional recipes. The restaurants generally serve lunch from 12pm to 3pm and dinner from 7:30pm to 11pm. class="wp-block-paragraph">During the festive season, Heraklion takes on a warm and festive atmosphere that contrasts pleasantly with the usual tranquility of the low season. The streets of the historic center are lit up, the squares are decked out with decorations and the local atmosphere becomes even more lively. We love this period for the authentic dimension it gives to the city: far from the big tourist crowds, you can rub shoulders with the locals as they celebrate. You can stroll through Christmas markets, discover local sweet specialties and attend cultural events organized in the city’s emblematic venues. Orthodox Christian religious festivals are an important part of local life: churches, including Agios Minas Cathedral, offer ceremonies and celebrations open to visitors. A great opportunity to immerse yourself in Cretan traditions in a historic setting!

New Year in Heraklion

Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Heraklion is like ringing in the new year in a Mediterranean city that combines conviviality with local traditions. We recommend reserving a table in one of the city’s best restaurants for the occasion: several establishments offer special New Year’s Eve menus based on Cretan products and Greek gastronomy. The lively squares and streets of the city center bring people together to celebrate midnight in a relaxed, family atmosphere. The following day, take the opportunity to explore the city at a more leisurely pace: sites and museums reopen quickly after the festivities, and the winter light of January is particularly conducive to strolls through the historic center.

<img decoding="async" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Crete/Heraklion/Koules/i-GGwH7Lz/1/MhX6GhRpmr6Gj84D4sfMBNnBX9dZ45NQtfjvNvD9p/L/fort-heraklion-crete-greece-8212-L.jpg" alt="Heraklion -
