Crete’s Mediterranean climate means that temperatures rarely dip below 10°C, making it pleasant to stroll around the old town even in December or January.

You’ll enjoy wandering around the Venetian Port and historic alleyways without the crowds of the high season. The atmosphere is more peaceful and the accommodation more affordable (even if some close).
Not everything remains open in winter, but the architectural and natural heritage remains accessible to all.

Attention! Boat trips are only available from April 30 to October 30.

Benefits

Temperatures remain mild thanks to the Mediterranean climate.

There are fewer crowds in the tourist sites and alleyways of the old town.

Accommodation rates are lower than in high season.

Some museums and places of worship remain open.

The landscapes between the sea and the White Mountains are as beautiful as ever.

Cretan gastronomy is best enjoyed in the less crowded taverns.

Disadvantages

Some attractions close in winter, notably the Limnoupolis water park and the Samaria Gorge (open from May to October).

Boat trips to Balos or Gramvousa are less frequent, or even suspended.

The days are shorter, which limits the time for outdoor exploration.

The risk of rain is higher, especially between November and February.

Direct flights from Western Europe are limited in the off-season, and stopovers via Athens or Thessaloniki are often necessary.

Swimming is not very tempting, although the sea is accessible.

WHERE TO STAY IN Chania

Our favorites: neighborhoods and hotels

The old town and the Venetian port
Hotel Azade – In winter, temperatures generally fluctuate between 10°C and 16°C during the day, while nights rarely fall below 7°C. Sunny days are not uncommon, even in the depths of winter, and the blue skies provide a striking contrast.

Rainfall is concentrated mainly between November and February. We advise you to bring a raincoat and layers of clothing to adapt to the day’s variations. The days are shorter, but the sunsets behind the Venetian Lighthouse are all the more striking. On the other hand, the wind can blow on the north coast, especially by the sea.

What to do in Chania in winter

Even in winter, Chania is full of things to see and do. Beaches and boat trips may be less accessible, but historical heritage, museums and gastronomy take up the slack. Here are our suggestions:

Stroll around the Venetian Port and walk to the Lighthouse

The Venetian Port, built in the 14th century, is the heart of Chania. Its circular arc of Venetian-inspired pastel facades is a picture we never tire of admiring. In winter, the area becomes quieter and you can stroll along the quay without the summer crowds.

The Janissary Mosque (Küçük Hasan), Crete’s oldest mosque, stands facing the port. On the other side, the Venetian arsenals are a reminder of the city’s past maritime power. We recommend extending your stroll along the breakwater to the Venetian Lighthouse, one of the oldest in the world, dating from the late 16th century. While the lighthouse is not accessible from the inside, the views over the city and the White Mountains in the background are well worth the detour.

Visit Chania’s museums

Winter is the ideal time to explore the city’s museums. The Archaeological Museum, housed in a former Venetian monastery, traces the past of western Crete from Minoan to Roman times. We found its collection of ceramics, jewelry and sarcophagi particularly instructive.

The Maritime Museum of Crete, located in the Firka Fortress, recounts the island’s naval history since the Bronze Age. You can also visit the Byzantine Museum in the Venetian Church of San Salvador, the Folklore Museum and the House of Eleftherios Venizelos, the Greek Prime Minister who was responsible for the union of Crete with Greece in 1913.

See our list of the best museums.

Discover our religious heritage

Chania has a rich religious heritage, bearing witness to the different cultures that have shaped the city. Trimartiri Orthodox Cathedral, completed in 1860, stands on a lively square in the historic center. We were seduced by the calm of its interior, in contrast to the bustle outside.

Agios Nikolaos Church, in the Splanzia district, has both a bell tower and a minaret, a legacy of Venetian and Ottoman rule. This less touristy district offers a more authentic atmosphere. Also worth a visit is the Etz Hayyim Synagogue, one of the few remaining testimonies to Crete’s historic Jewish community.

Cretan gastronomy

Winter is the ideal time to devote yourself to the pleasures of the table. Cretan cuisine is based on fresh, seasonal produce: olive oil, sun-drenched vegetables, local cheeses and aromatic herbs. We thoroughly enjoyed dishes such as dakos (barley rusk topped with grated tomato and mizithra cheese), moussaka, spanakopita and dolmades.

Stroll through the old town and Splanzia district

The old town of Chania is easily explored on foot. The colorful alleyways blend Venetian, Ottoman and Byzantine influences in a pleasant maze to explore. The Splanzia district, less frequented by tourists, offers a more local atmosphere. We recommend a coffee under the square’s large plane tree, where the locals gather.

The Municipal Covered Market (Agora), open since 1911 and laid out in the shape of a cross over 4000m², is due to reopen in 2026 after renovation work. It’s a lively place for locals, and we’re looking forward to seeing it again.

Winter excursions

Some excursions around Chania are still accessible in winter. The Theriso Gorge, a few kilometers south of the city, is accessible via a panoramic road cut into the rock. They lead to the mountain village of Therisso, linked to the Cretan revolution, where you’ll find fresh air and good food. We enjoyed this short outing, ideal for a half-day trip.

Lake Kournas, Crete’s only freshwater lake, around 45km to the east, offers a peaceful setting surrounded by green hills. The town of Rethymno, about 1h10 away, is also a pleasant excursion to discover its compact Venetian port and fortress.

However, the Samaria Gorge is closed from November to April, and cruises to Balos are reduced or suspended out of season. We recommend that you check availability before departure.

Theriso Gorge

RENT YOUR CAR IN Crete

Our preferred agency is Rental Center Crete
everything is included in the price and the service is excellent. The city has its own international airport (CHQ), about a 20-minute drive from the center. In high season, many direct flights connect Chania with major European cities. Out of season, flights via Athens or Thessaloniki are generally available. Allow around 3h to 4h for a direct flight from Western Europe, and a minimum of 5h for a stopover.

Alternatively, you can arrive via Heraklion airport, Crete’s main airport, around 2h15 away. From Heraklion, we recommend renting a car or taking the bus to Chania.

Night-time ferry services link the port of Piraeus (Athens) with the port of Souda, near Chania. The crossing takes between 8 and 9 hours. We recommend this option if you wish to combine a visit to Crete with a stay in mainland Greece. See ferry options.

It’s time to book!
Compare everything: companies, prices, schedules and availability.

Christmas in Chania

Chania is decked out in lights and decorations for the festive season. The festive atmosphere settles in the narrow streets of the old town and around the Venetian Port. You can stroll between the stalls of a Christmas market and discover local handicrafts. Concerts and entertainment punctuate the period.

New Year’s Eve in Chania

Spending New Year’s Eve in Chania is an experience worth considering.
