This ancient Cretan capital, located on the north-west coast of Crete, offers a concentration of Venetian heritage<\/strong>, turquoise beaches<\/strong>, breathtaking gorges<\/strong> and delicious Cretan cuisine<\/strong>. We were won over by the diversity of its landscapes and the richness of its history. <\/p>\n\n

Practical tips for visiting Chania in 5 days<\/h2>\n\n

What can you see in Chania in 5 days? Is it long enough?<\/h3>\n\n

It depends. Five days are enough to explore the old town, its museums and nearby beaches, as well as excursions to natural sites such as Balos Lagoon and the Samaria Gorge. <\/p>\n\n

\"Port<\/figure>\n\n

Getting around Chania<\/h3>\n\n

Chania’s old town is easily explored on foot: the Venetian port, museums, churches and the beaches of Koum Kapi and Nea Chora are all accessible without a vehicle.<\/p>\n\n

However, for excursions outside the city (Balos, Elafonissi, Samaria Gorge, Akrotiri Peninsula), we strongly recommend renting a car. The main roads on the north coast are well maintained, even if some mountain stretches have sharp bends. Another option is to book organized excursions. <\/p>\n\n

Please note that parking in the city center can be difficult in high season: we recommend that you choose accommodation that includes parking.<\/p>\n\n

Day 1 – Discover the old town and the Venetian port<\/h2>\n\n

Morning around the port<\/h3>\n\n

On this first day, we invite you to immerse yourself in the historic heart of Chania. Start your morning with a stroll along the Venetian Port, built in the 14th century. The harbor is the jewel in the town’s crown, forming a circular arc of houses lined with pastel Venetian-inspired facades. We were captivated by the atmosphere, especially in the late morning, when the light brings out the colors of the buildings. <\/p>\n\n

\"Chania<\/figure>\n\n

Here you’ll discover the Janissary Mosque (K\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck Hasan), a pale-pink domed edifice that is the oldest mosque on Crete, now converted into an exhibition space. A stroll along the seafront will take you to the Venetian Lighthouse, built at the end of the 16th century and considered one of the oldest lighthouses in the world. <\/p>\n\n

Lunch and stroll through the old town<\/h3>\n\n

Extend your morning with a stroll through the colorful streets of the historic center. You’ll pass the Trimartiri Orthodox Cathedral, completed in 1860, whose name means “three martyrs” in Greek, in reference to its three naves. We were seduced by the elegance of its fa\u00e7ade and the calm that reigns inside. Continue on to the less touristy Splanzia district, where you’ll find Agios Nikolaos Church. <\/p>\n\n

The distinctive feature of this church is the cohabitation of a campanile and a minaret, a legacy of Venetian and then Ottoman rule. We recommend a coffee under the square’s large plane tree, where the locals gather. <\/p>\n\n

Afternoon: Firka Fortress and Maritime Museum<\/h3>\n\n

In the early afternoon, head for the Firka Fortress, which has dominated the waterfront since the 17th century. This military bastion, completed under Venetian rule, was later used as barracks under Ottoman occupation. We enjoyed a walk along the ramparts, from where the panorama of the port, the lighthouse and the Cretan Sea is breathtaking. It was here that the Greek flag was raised in 1913 to celebrate the union of Crete and Greece. <\/p>\n\n
