We were overwhelmed by the diversity and beauty of these stretches of sand. From crystal-clear turquoise waters to infinite hues, from pink sand to black pebbles, each beach reveals its own unique character.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elafonisi, with its shallow lagoon and pinkish sand, made a particularly strong impression on us. This beach at the extreme western end of the island is a breathtaking natural spectacle, where the transparent water invites you to take a dip. Balos, accessible by boat or via a steep path, offers breathtaking panoramic views from the heights. We were fascinated by the millennia-old history that permeates these sites. The palace at Knossos, the center of Minoan civilization, bears witness to a refined society that flourished over 3,500 years ago. Walking through these partially reconstructed ruins, we could imagine life in this labyrinth of rooms, staircases and courtyards. The restored frescoes reveal a sophisticated society that mastered architecture, art and maritime trade. Phaistos, situated on a hill overlooking the Messara plain, offers a different, less touristy atmosphere. The site of Gortyne, the Roman capital of Crete, provides an insight into another period in the island&#8217;s history.
