Located right in the heart of the historic center, this discreetly charming church is one of <strong>Crete<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>most important places of worship <\/strong>. Originally a Byzantine basilica, then a mosque under Ottoman rule, it has lived many lives before becoming the Orthodox edifice you&#8217;ll discover today. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why visit Agios Titos Church?<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Agios Titos Church worth it? In the morning, the low-angled light highlights the pale stone of the fa\u00e7ade, and the discreet dome is barely visible behind the roof. It&#8217;s a peaceful spot, ideal for taking a break while observing the comings and goings of locals and travellers alike.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inside, it was the <strong>colored lights<\/strong> that touched us most. The sun&#8217;s rays shine through the colored stained glass, dancing softly on the white walls. We learned that in Heraklion, a first church dedicated to the saint was built under the Byzantine Empire. It was later rebuilt by the Venetians, who installed the seat of the Catholic archbishop. After the Ottoman conquest in 1669, the building was transformed into a mosque, as were many of the island&#8217;s places of worship. In 1856, a violent earthquake completely destroyed the building. The present church was rebuilt in 1869 under Ottoman administration, but in neo-classical style, and returned to Orthodox worship. Did you know that the current building, erected in 1869 after a devastating earthquake, stands on a much older place of worship? When you look at the fa\u00e7ade, just think that it sums up the turbulent history of Crete. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Atypical exterior architecture<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Heraklion\/Ayios-titos\/i-bTvXDBk\/0\/NJ5LgWskGQbkvcfhX4xSNvvQwSzxMNVw6Mj8rfb4N\/L\/agios%20titos%20church%20heraklion%20crete-02-L.jpg\" alt=\"Agios Titos Church, Heraklion - top of facade\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the outside, the Church of Agios Titos surprised us with its simple volumes and silhouette, far removed from conventional churches. Doesn&#8217;t the rectangular building and its 4-sided roof give you the impression of an almost civil look? <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Heraklion\/Ayios-titos\/i-6LkZx8H\/0\/Lpg2ZmSNZ2qbSZmpTWhQ4SgmTBqK9cQCT6MqHcBfg\/L\/agios%20titos%20church%20heraklion%20crete-63-L.jpg\" alt=\"Agios Titos Church, Heraklion - visitors\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were immediately drawn to the central dome, and learned that it is a nod to Orthodox architecture. In fact, the building was rebuilt in 1869 after an earthquake destroyed the Venetian structure, in a political context of Ottoman domination. Unfortunately, the minaret added during the Muslim period (the church had been transformed into a mosque after the 1669 conquest) disappeared at the beginning of the XX\u1d49 century.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Heraklion\/Ayios-titos\/i-4hz4ndw\/0\/MDnnfQQFcm7xtmCJGVw68vBfnrQrh3FJzvXX9V68v\/L\/agios%20titos%20church%20heraklion%20crete-09-L.jpg\" alt=\"Rear facade of the agios titos church\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rear facade of the church<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, perhaps the most striking feature is the absence of a steeple and the apparent austerity of the fa\u00e7ade. They reflect the history of this building, which has undergone a number of &#8220;religious superimpositions&#8221;. The church doesn&#8217;t flaunt its sacredness on the outside: you&#8217;ll have to enter it to understand the spirituality it harbors. This sobriety made our visit all the more memorable.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A quiet spot in the heart of Heraklion&#8217;s historic center<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Heraklion\/Ayios-titos\/i-NX54dHK\/0\/LSR7w7w7VQ4WztP5sv9LN6twLNw7GkfMn6XVpvgG6\/L\/agios%20titos%20church%20heraklion%20crete-12-L.jpg\" alt=\"Agios Titos Church, Heraklion - agiou titou beach\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We learned that <em>Agiou Titou Square<\/em>, which houses the church, has been a strategic location since the Middle Ages. In fact, it&#8217;s not far from Via <em>25 Avgoustou<\/em>, the ancient link between the port and the administrative heart of Heraklion in Venetian times. The Agios Titos church, once a Latin cathedral under the Venetians, then the <em>Vezir Tzami <\/em>mosque under the Ottomans, has always dominated this square.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, this vast tree-lined pedestrian area allows you to stand back and contemplate the building in its entirety. Far from the hustle and bustle of some of the neighboring shopping streets, we loved this square, which retains a soothing atmosphere, ideal for a break or a photo. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Heraklion\/Ayios-titos\/i-Xs9cqGv\/0\/LZ9T2pjdtfLNb5w8jzf46Qg9cKfqhvkL2nt3LWD2j\/L\/agios%20titos%20church%20heraklion%20crete-07-L.jpg\" alt=\"Agios Titos Church, Heraklion - trees\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the morning or at sunset, the light caresses the church&#8217;s pale walls, revealing the texture of the stone. It&#8217;s a breathtaking place in the city, at the crossroads of history, spirituality and everyday life. If you get the chance, come back and admire the facade of the Church of Agios Titos by night, as it is adorned with a play of colored lights that give it a special charm, and make it worth a little digestive detour after a meal in one of the city&#8217;s best restaurants.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The interior of Agios Titos Church: luminous and symbolic, rich in detail<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Colorful stained glass with shimmering reflections<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Heraklion\/Ayios-titos\/i-qhg8XqD\/0\/MCdNTSMSkFSWRZqWmBtkMMBgJn4p57WCTNjgSfgv5\/L\/agios%20titos%20church%20heraklion%20crete-35-L.jpg\" alt=\"Agios Titos Church, Heraklion - multicolored stained glass windows\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we entered Agios Titos Church, one of the first things that caught our eye was the light filtering through the stained glass windows. On either side of the nave, you&#8217;ll notice several windows adorned with colorful stained glass depicting geometric shapes. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Heraklion\/Ayios-titos\/i-VZGN2Fz\/0\/KDrmZ2RNtgWx8gfdgLjJRBq79bC2mkmJq2cgwgrQH\/L\/agios%20titos%20church%20heraklion%20crete-34-L.jpg\" alt=\"Agios Titos Church, Heraklion - coloured light and dome\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their style is relatively simple, but the palette of colors used creates a soft, warm atmosphere that made a lasting impression on us. Daylight streams through the skylights onto the church&#8217;s white walls, creating an atmosphere conducive to contemplation. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Heraklion\/Ayios-titos\/i-gKkpQgk\/0\/L67WpV24VgzntQRhTCJkxfTJd8MZ9p3hmqMqbD37g\/L\/agios%20titos%20church%20heraklion%20crete-59-L.jpg\" alt=\"Agios Titos Church, Heraklion - stained glass zoom\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The effect is particularly striking when the sun is low, in the late morning or at the end of the day. We therefore recommend that you make the most of these times, if possible. Of course, you&#8217;ll notice that the stained glass windows aren&#8217;t from an earlier period, but they&#8217;re an integral part of the church&#8217;s visual identity. They are a reminder that the church, though sober, remains a living place, rooted in Christian tradition.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The carved wooden iconostasis<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Heraklion\/Ayios-titos\/i-VBbrvPm\/0\/MJ3cK7m8GJfvZQjtGLzZfwqtDLB6BBj9BLP79ddnG\/L\/agios%20titos%20church%20heraklion%20crete-45-L.jpg\" alt=\"Agios Titos Church, Heraklion - iconostasis\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the heart of the liturgical space, the iconostasis will immediately catch your eye. This carved wooden partition symbolically separates the nave from the sanctuary, according to Orthodox tradition. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Crete\/Heraklion\/Ayios-titos\/i-c3ZWGQw\/0\/Mj5LJq9wXTptwVQfdH7hXm2ST9rfbxbDRBWqkS6jd\/L\/agios%20titos%20church%20heraklion%20crete-52-L.jpg\" alt=\"Agios Titos Church, Heraklion - slanting iconostasis\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is richly worked here, with finely engraved vegetal and geometric motifs. This is the main decorative element of the interior, and undoubtedly the most striking of our visit. It testifies to local craftsmanship and attachment to religious tradition. Even though the church was recently rebuilt on an historical scale, this iconostasis perfectly embodies the spiritual continuity of the place.   <\/p>\n\n<div
