Housed in a renovated former power station, this museum offers an immersion into Cretan nature through exhibitions, dioramas and interactive experiences such as an <strong>earthquake simulator<\/strong>, which we loved.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article, you&#8217;ll find some <strong>useful tips<\/strong> to help you prepare for your visit and have a wonderful time!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cretelovers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/visit-museum-natural-history-crete-heraklion-en-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"visit-museum-natural-history-creates-heraklion\" class=\"wp-image-1226\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This opinion is completely <strong>independent<\/strong>, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why visit the Natural History Museum of Crete?<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Crete&#8217;s Natural History Museum worth a visit? Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We didn&#8217;t fall in love with this museum, but it&#8217;s a good idea if you&#8217;ve already been to all the city&#8217;s museums and are looking for an indoor activity.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What we liked<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the Natural History Museum of Crete offers a fine presentation of the <strong>fauna<\/strong>, <strong>flora<\/strong> and <strong>geological phenomena<\/strong> specific to the island and the Aegean Sea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>it showcases the diversity of <strong>Mediterranean ecosystems<\/strong> with a wealth of scientific information, showcases of naturalized species, and explanatory panels to help visitors better understand local biodiversity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In our opinion, the highlight of this museum is its<strong> earthquake simulator<\/strong>: an immersive, educational experience that provides a better understanding of the major geological phenomena that shape the region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What we didn&#8217;t like<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the <strong>museography is very restrained<\/strong>, with a strong emphasis on textual support, which can give an impression of density, especially for those who prefer a more visual or interactive experience (especially children). Its mission is to <strong>preserve, study and promote the natural heritage <\/strong>of Crete and, more broadly, of the eastern Mediterranean.<br\/>We learned that the building in which it has been housed since 2007 is a <strong>restored former power station<\/strong>. The exhibition space is vast, covering more than 3,000 m2. You&#8217;ll notice that the museum features permanent exhibitions on the fauna, flora, geology and ecosystems of the region, as well as interactive areas such as its earthquake simulator. Located in the heart of Heraklion in a restored historic house, Peskesi offers refined traditional Cretan cuisine, with a farm-to-table approach.
